November 16th saw the return of rock-n-roll to Anglesy with the first night of The Anglesey Rock-n-Roll Club. The North Wales Alley Cats had the honour of being to take the stage for the opening of the new club. With The Rave On Record Hop providing the backing on the first night. At first the crowd was a little on the thin side but as the night progressed the room began to steadily fill up as the bar crowd were drawn in by music and soon around twenty couples were jiving to the infectious fifties sounds. |
It was nice to see some of the younger members of The Wellmans Club on the floor jiving with the more mainstream rock-n-roll fans. Hopefully with the right amount of support the club will grow. Live acts have been booked for the next three months. The occasional record hop nights, with reduced admission, will help to boost club funds, enabling more well known bands to be booked in future. |

Jive's alive as 50's night is a big hit
Anglesey has the rock-n-roll vibe, as a new 50's night went down a treat in Llangefni. DJ Mike Russell, of Upper Bangor, says the first of a regular slot at Llangefni's Wellmans Sports & Social Club was a success. Big Mike said: 'We started the club with the newest, and probably the only specialist rock-n-roll band in North Wales, The Alicats from Rhyl.
We had a decent crowd for the first night and everyone enjoyed themselves. At one point the floor was virtually full of jiving couples, and it was great to see some of the younger generation out there jiving 50's style.
The band was so popular that I have booked them again for the next show on December 21st.'
Mike, who lives with his wife Hazel, a fellow 50's fan, in Holyhead Road Upper Bangor, still wears the fashions of the era, drape jackets and crepe soled creepers, while Hazel still has the full circle skirts and big lacey underskirts. Mike has been on the rock-n-roll scene for over thirty years and in the past has worked with such rock-n-roll legends as Dave Edmunds, Shakin' Stevens, The Crickets, The Comets and The Jets to name but a few.
